Holiday Reads

Reading is one of lifes greatest joys especially when dropped into a world completely different to your own and experiencing someone elses good times from the comfort of your own chair. Here are a few of my favourite books that I’ve read recently.

The driving over lemons trilogy by Chris Stewart

Edd and I read these books while hiking in Spain. It was wonderful to experience second hand his adventures in integrating into the farming community in rural Andalucia and renovating an old farmhouse as we walked through northern spain. These books made us laugh out loud and Stewarts humourous and heart warming stories left a lovely happy feeling in our heads after reading. Click on the pictures for the link to Amazon.

Head over Heel, Chris Harrison.

I wish I had read this book when in southern Italy. Instead I read it whilst blanketed up by the fire on cold winters evenings here in London. I loved reading about the daily rhythms of a southern Italian town.  Chris Harrison meets the love of his life on a weekend trip to Dublin and after a long distance relationship, follows her back to live with her parents in her home town in Italy. His thoughtful and humorous account of daily life and the frustrations of bureaucracy are extremely well written as is his delicate and heart breaking account of his father in laws decline into alzheimer’s.

Total Recall, Arnold Schwarzenegger

Bit of a wild card, but an excellent read. I read this while walking the Camino and became so hilariously enthralled that I was dropping it into nearly every conversation. I even became momentarily interested in bodybuilding. Fascinating read on how he built himself up both literally and metaphorically.

Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a Bicycle

Incredible story of an Irish woman who cycled to India in the 1960’s with a revolver in her bag. Her travels through Afghanistan are particularly poignant. The whole story in inspiring and jaw dropping at the same time. Read it.

The Riviera Set, Mary S. Lovell

A mesmerising account of the glamorous life on the Cote D’Azure in the 50’s with every big name in politics, hollywood and royalty involved.
